ask jenny > you have regrets?

Hi Jenny,

Your blog is fabulous! I am an aspiring opera singer, but I'm still young (18) and am learning a lot about the lifestyle from your blog and other opera singers that I know. It has often been said to me that I shouldn't persue opera if I could be happy doing anything else. Well, I couldn't be happy doing anything else and I am determined. :) I was just wondering if you had any regrets or advice in the vein of what you would change about your music education, mistakes you made when you were young (as a singer!), and how it has affected your relationships? Living out of a suitcase seems exciting to me, but I realize that there is a lot of sacrifice too though I am not sure to what extent.

On a side note, I love listening to you sing! Come to Raleigh, NC sometime and perform with the NC opera! That would be super cool.

All the best,

Hi Elaine,

Wow, that's a big question. I would never discourage anyone from doing this job, as it certainly is wonderful in so many ways. However, as you know from reading, it can be very difficult. I don't know that I have any regrets, I think things have turned out just fine for me. However, in terms of my education, I WISH I would have studied abroad for a year (you still can) and become fluent in one of the singing languages while I was still in undergrad. I wish I had studied piano more seriously and could play better now. Other than that, you just have to go for it and learn things along the way. If you really want it, don't worry about regrets, just go for it!

Thank you, Jenny! You are such an inspiration to me -- I love your blog and your work. I was a little on the fence about studying abroad, but now I definitely will! And take my piano more seriously...better go practice that a bit now. ;)
