I'm 19 and a mezzo, and I am considering going into opera professionally. The thing is, I would LOVE to play pants roles (I also do theatre and I've played lots of male roles in school due to my low voice/lack of boys), but I'm short (1.46m, which I think is about 4'10"?) and young-looking. I'm from Singapore, where people are Asian and generally shorter and younger-looking than Caucasians, but even here I'm still shorter and more baby-faced than average.
Do you think I could ever be cast in pants roles or important female roles without looking ridiculous, or will my height & appearance restrict me to little-boy pants roles (like Cherubino) and minor female characters?
Thank you! I really love your blog.Azura
THere are plenty of pants roles where being short is great! Hansel for example can be short or tall, so can Cherubino. I think if you sing well, your size will not matter one bit. Good luck!
